About the Item
Pair biscuit sculptures of eagles. Work from the second half of the 19th century, bearing the incised mark "Mre. Imple. de Sèvres" (not guaranteed).
Important pair of porcelain biscuit eagles, depicted pendant, wings slightly spread, standing on a circular base. The abundant plumage is rendered with great attention to detail, characteristic of productions inspired by the imperial style. The two subjects face each other in a hieratic pose, evoking allegories of power and vigilance. Each base is incised with the words "Mre. Imple. de Sèvres". However, in the absence of the additional markings usually found on the Manufacture's official products, this attribution cannot be confirmed with certainty. It could be a period work, in the Sèvres style, by a third-party manufacturer who affixed an imitation mark.
Remarks: designed in pendant, these two eagle figures illustrate the taste for symbolic ornamentation during the Napoleon III era, when the imperial eagle motif was regularly used in the decorative arts.
