About the Item
Striking sculpture of a crocodile hand-carved and etched in solid wood with great craftsmanship and detail, made in Mexico. An impressive yet whimsical depiction of a menacing open-mouthed beast. The specific author and provenance of the piece are unknown, although it exhibits similarities to other wooden sculptures found in various areas of Mexico. Some parts are painted with what seems to be lime-based paint, usually used for wood religious figures and statuettes (a technique called "Estofado"). The legs were made in a much simpler, less detailed manner (perhaps intended for standing on something), while the rest of the body is very detailed, even with a fairly realistic look. There are signs of wear and age that enhance the originality, rarity, and character of it.
