About the Item
19th C. Pair Faience of Rouen Summer & Winter Garniture Bust Sculpture Statue LA ,The two sculptures were commissioned in the mid to late 19th century, Nicely proportioned and vibrant colors. Other copies are either smaller and/or not in the original vibrant multi-color palette as this pair. A masterpiece of modeling from a series of five enormous faience busts originally commissioned in 1730 from the Rouen manufactory of Nicolas Fouquay.
Faience of Rouen Depicting Summer and Winter. The theme was Apollo overseeing the Four Seasons. The original Apollo is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum (London) with the Four Seasons busts including this original piece of "Winter," are at the Louvre. The sculptures could be mounted inside a niche, on a fireplace, hallway, dining / living room, Library decorating a table, console.
