About the Item

Dancer by Demétre Chiparus 1886 - 1947 Large chrysoelephantine sculpture in gilt bronze Marble base. Signed "D. H. Chiparus". Measures: 67 cms. alt. total and 49 cms. diam. base (26,37 x 19,29) Excelent condition. Demétre Haralamb Chiparus was a Romanian Art Deco era sculptor who lived and worked in Paris, France. He was one of the most important sculptors of the Art Deco era. Sculptures of Chiparus represent the classical manifestation of Art Deco style in decorative bronze and ivory sculpture. Traditionally, four factors influenced his creative activity *the Russian Ballets of Serge Diaghilev's, Nijinsky and Rubinstein *ancient Egyptian art, *French theatre, music halls and cabarets *Early motion pictures and fashion magazines with dancers, stars and models Which made him create figures with a long, slender, stylized appearance. like the faces of “Persian Dance” and the dress in “Starfish Girl” exactly reproduces the sketch for Goldfish's dress from the ballet “Underwater kingdom” by Lev Annensky. After the tomb of Tutankhamun was discovered in 1922, the art of ancient Egypt and the East came to French fashion, and was also reflected in the creative activity of Chiparus. Several sculptures by Chiparus and Claire Colinet represent Queen Cleopatra and Egyptian dancers. The sculptures of Chiparus reflect his time and 1920-1930s sentiment of "folle". Coming from the oldest French tradition of high-quality and extra-artistic decorative arts, the sculptures of Chiparus combine elegance and luxury, embodying the spirit of the Art Deco epoch. Collector interest in the work of Chiparus appeared in the 1970s and has flourished since the 1990s. A major collection of Chiparus' work is on display in the permanent collection of Casa Lis, the art nouveau and art deco museum in Salamanca, Spain PRADERA is a second generation of a family run business jewelers of reference in Spain, with a rich track record being official distributers of prime European jewelry brands like Chanel, Baccarat, Pomellato, Mattioli, Chantecler, Valente, Breitling, Audemars Piguet, Fabergé ... they have a large experience from working and observing best European craftsmen, best jewelry techniques and practices, and they have curated jewelry collections for high net worth individuals and family heritages. In industrial uses, the modern process is called investment casting. An ancient practice, the process today varies from foundry to foundry, but the steps which are usually used in casting small bronze sculptures in a modern bronze foundry are generally quite standardised. Demetre H. Chiparus was born in Romania in 1886, attended school in Italy, then, shortly before World War I moved to Paris. He attended school at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under two talented sculptors Anonin Mercier and Jean Boucher, who provided him the opportunity to learn the trade. He later began to experiment with small bronze sculptures and produce small bronze works, exhibiting his small sculptures and, in 1914, was awarded an honorable mention at the Salon of the Societe des Artistes Francais.
