About the Item

A bronze bust is dedicated to an artist's friend. Signed and dated. Condition is excellent. Hayes began painting in earnest and though self taught, was soon showing his paintings at some prestigious art shows around the country. After about three years of painting, he realized painting was not truly fulfilling his creative needs in the creation of his art. At this point in his life, the 33 year old native Texan had already seen experience as a journeyman carpenter, steel worker, oilfield welder, professional cowboy, a territory manager and corporate sales representative. Finally all of the skills he had learned and used in all these former professions were about to be put to use in his next profession...that of a sculptor. In the summer of 1980, mainly through trial and error, Hayes created his first small sculpture in wax of a rodeo cowboy, titled “Amarilloby Morning”. It was cast in bronze in a limited edition of 15 which sold out very quickly. Hayes was hooked. Through intensive self-study of past and present masters of the sculpted form, the diligent study of anatomy of both humans and animals, a strong work ethic and a real passion for perfection brought Hayes to his first monumental commission. In the spring of 1989, Hayes was commissioned to create a27 ft. tall bronze monument, an “action portrait” sculpture of Rodeo Superstar Casey Tibbs on the famous bronc, Necktie, titled, “The Champ.” The monument unveiled and dedicated in August 1989 became the center piece and the official logo of The ProRodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of The American Cowboy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Today there are eleven of Hayes’ bronzes in their permanent art collection and two more outdoor monuments by Hayes at this great museum. In 1992, for the 60th Anniversary of The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Hayes created “Wild and Free”. It was originally installed at the entrance to the Astroarena, then in 2003, this monumental sculpture was relocated to its new home inCarruthPlazabetween the Astrodome and Reliant Stadium. The six, 1 ½ life-size, mustangs, are in a two hundred feet long setting of creeks and waterfalls over huge boulders, landscaped with nativeTexasplants, wildflowers and grasses. Hayes is now sought after for his excellence in quality and dependability in designing, creating, delivering and installing life-size and larger public art. His public and corporate bronze monuments number over 60. These include; “The Struggle - Man and Energy,” a sixteen ft tall Pegasus, at Energy Plaza in Houston. Under a 300 year old live oak at The George Ranch Historical Park and Museum, a bench with life-size bronzes of “Albert and Mamie George, The Spirit of Giving” invites people visiting the museum to sit a while and enjoy. A life-size bronze of an “Aggie Redpot”, “Aggie Spirit, The Tradition Lives”, was installed in College Station, Texas in 2004. The Aggie is pointing toward the site of the bonfire tragedy in 1999. A15 ft. tall WW II Monument, “A Call to Duty” was dedicated on Veteran’s Day 2006 on Interstate 35 outside Gainesville and is Texas’ first monument dedicated solely to WW II Veterans. Two different lifesize firefighter bronze sculptures, “In the Line of Fire,” for the Houston Fire Museum in Houston and “A Breath of Valor” for a Firefighter Memorial in Baytown that was dedicated in May 2009.BaylorUniversityLawSchoolcommissioned Hayes to create a lifesize figurative portrait in bronze of former Baylor Law Professor and living legend, “matte ‘Mad Dog’ Dawson”. Each year, the small bronze maquette of this monument is given as a trophy to the top aspiring young law students. A life-size sculpture of founding Pastors John and Dodie Osteen was dedicated on Mother’s Day 2009, to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Lakewood Church inHouston. A lifesize figurative portrait of Thelma Mercer will greet visitors to “Thelma’s Garden” inside Mercer Arboretum and Botanical Gardens in the fall of 2009. If only, a beautiful mermaid graces the Grand Golf Club inSan Diego, California. A ‘larger than life-size’ figurative portrait of famed heart surgeon, Dr. Michael DeBakey will be ready for the opening of the new Michael E. DeBakey Library and Museum at The Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in the fall of 2009. Other bronze sculpture by Hayes can be found in the permanent collections of major museums in California, Colorado, South Dakota,Texas and even Russia along with corporate collections all-over the world. Two different Hayes bronzes, “Wild and Free” and “Defiance” are now in The George Bush Presidential Library in College Station, Texas. Hayes' donated works of art have raised enormous sums for The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, American Cancer Society, The Sunshine Kids, and various other children's charities around the country. Hayes is a member with the rank of Major in The Former Texas Rangers Foundation. He has served as a Judge, Steering Judge and Vice Chairman of Judges for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo School Art Program. He is a member of The National Sculpture Society. In 1999 Hayes was recognized and honored by his home state when The Texas State Senate and 76th Legislature named Edd Hayes as Official Texas state sculptor.
