French 19th Century Louis XVI Style Patinated Bronze and Ormolu Bust of Menelaus
About the Item
A striking French 19th century Louis XVI st. patinated bronze and ormolu bust of Menelaus. The bust is raised by a square ormolu base below a fine mottled socle pedestal. The richly chased patinated bronze soldier is draped in period attire tied at his shoulder by a fine patinated bronze fibula. The handsome bearded man wears an impressive helmet with most decorative ormolu accents of birds and mythological creatures.
In Greek mythology, Menelaus was a king of Mycenaean Sparta, the husband of Helen of Troy, and the son of Atreus and Aerope. According to the Iliad, Menelaus was a central figure in the Trojan Was, leading the Spartan contingent of the Greek army, under his elder brother Agamemnon, king of Mycenae.
