Jose Luis Zorrilla De San Martin Bust Sculpture of Dante Alighieri Uruguay 1933

About the Item

A masterfully touching and realistic depiction of 13th Century Italian poet Dante. Before we dive into the artist, Jose Luis Zorrilla de San Martin, let's refresh our memories on Dante. From wikipedia, "Dante Alighieri (Italian: c.?1265 – 14 September 1321), most likely baptized Durante di Alighiero degli Alighieri and often referred to as Dante, was an Italian poet, writer and philosopher. His Divine Comedy, originally called Comedìa (modern Italian: Commedia) and later christened Divina by Giovanni Boccaccio, is widely considered one of the most important poems of the Middle Ages and the greatest literary work in the Italian language. Dante is known for establishing the use of the vernacular in literature at a time when most poetry was written in Latin, which was accessible only to educated readers. His De vulgari eloquentia (On Eloquence in the Vernacular) was one of the first scholarly defenses of the vernacular. His use of the Florentine dialect for works such as The New Life (1295) and Divine Comedy helped establish the modern-day standardized Italian language. By writing his poem in the Italian vernacular rather than in Latin, Dante influenced the course of literary development, making Italian the literary language in western Europe for several centuries. His work set a precedent that important Italian writers such as Petrarch and Boccaccio would later follow." And now onto the artist of the sculpture, Jose Luis Zorrilla de San Martin. Also from Wikipedia, "José Luis Zorrilla de San Martín (5 September 1891 – 24 May 1975) was a Uruguayan sculptor and painter. One of the pivotal sculptors from Uruguay, his most significant impact was through the monuments he created in the capital city of Montevideo. His style displayed elements of aesthetic baroque incorporated with modern sculpture." This sculpture of Dante is presented in aluminum and is signed and dated on the side. The delicate and realistic sculpting and modeling of the face is a testament to Mr. Zorrilla's eye for beauty, truth and life. While I can't see any imperfections on this nearly antique sculpture, there may be a few surface scratches here and there. Nothing that would detract from the poignancy of the piece.
