About the Item

Unique and antique bronze sculpture, bust of a Satyr (“Satan”) by Jef Lambeaux.. A striking and expressive life-size bronze bust by the celebrated Belgian sculptor Jef Lambeaux, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. The work captures the dramatic vitality and inner tension characteristic of Lambeaux’s oeuvre, blending symbolist intensity with baroque dynamism. The bust depicts a mythical satyr or Satanic figure, rendered with powerful emotion and extraordinary technical mastery. The face, deeply modeled and animated by sweeping lines of hair and beard, conveys both torment and pride, a hallmark of Lambeaux’s exploration of the human and the demonic within. Executed in a dark patinated bronze with a subtle sheen, the sculpture displays vigorous modeling and a strong sense of movement. The anatomical forms are expressive rather than idealized, reflecting Lambeaux’s fascination with raw vitality and spiritual struggle. The piece bears the sculptor’s incised signature “Jef Lambaux” to the reverse, a documented variant of Lambeaux’s authentic signature found on several of his original bronzes produced in Brussels during this period, circa 1890–1905. Comparable examples of satyr-themed works by Lambeaux are held in private collections and have appeared in major European auctions. This particular bust stands out for its commanding presence, sensitivity of modeling, and powerful psychological expression. A superb example of fin-de-siècle Belgian sculpture, embodying both the sensual vitality and expressive freedom that made Jef Lambeaux one of the foremost sculptors of his generation. Rare bronze sculpture of a joyous boy from the early 1900s. The sculptor of this Fine work of art has managed to capture the pure innocence and joy of a young child. Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna on Laughing Boy — The representation of children belongs among the most charming motifs revived by Renaissance art under the influence of Hellenism. Like a number of similar statuettes of equally unaffected charm, this one is probably the portrait of a child conceived as the infant Jesus. Such statuettes were commissioned to be set up in private chapels. The Laughing Boy is considered to be the last work of Desiderio da Settignano...
