Pair of Carved Marble Busts on Stands by Italian Sculptor Arnaldo Fazzi
About the Item
Pair of carved marble busts on stands by Italian sculptor Arnaldo Fazzi
Italian, 1889
Measures: Bust with fruit: Height 74cm, width 45cm, depth 35cm
Bust with birds: Height 69cm, width 45cm, depth 22cm
Pedestals: Height 117cm, width 45cm, depth 45cm
The wonderful marble busts in this pair are by the nineteenth-century, Florence-based sculptor Arnaldo Fazzi. The busts portray two young, classically beautiful women. One bust depicts its sitter with her head turned slightly askance; she wears deftly carved clothing and bears a foliate wreath laden with fruit around her head, and further fruit below her chest. The other bust represents its subject with her head turned ninety degrees; two birds perch on her shoulders, and she kisses the beak of one. Both figures are carved with exceptional fineness, with moments of high relief—such as in the eyes and mouths—contrasted against subtlety in representation of flesh. The busts are raised on marble pedestals, and the figure with fruit is signed, situated, and dated "A. Fazzi / Firenze / 1889" to its reverse.

View AllBronze Bust Sculpture on Marble Plinth
Located in London, GB
This strikingly naturalistic bronze sculpture was created in Florence in 1895. The bust depicts an elderly man, most likely a farm worker, carrying a heavy sack of grain over his shoulder. He wears an old slightly ragged shirt which is open at his chest, revealing his thin body underneath. The man looks out into the distance on the left, his eyebrows slightly furrowed. His mouth is open as though he is breathing heavily with the strain of the work or calling out to someone unknown to the viewer.
The sculptor has accurately rendered every detail, with great truth to reality. The faint stubble on the man's chin and the wrinkles on his face and hands are faithfully portrayed. In its naturalistic style and its everyday, unidealised subject-matter, this bronze may be described as a work of Realism. The Realist movement flourished in the arts in Europe in this period, the 19th Century.
The bust is signed ‘G Rossi...

Pair of Orientalist bronze busts by Cordier, 1861
French, 1861
Man: Height 42cm, width 32cm, depth 18cm
Woman: Height 40cm, width 26cm, depth 16cm
This impressive pair of bronze busts were made by the renowned French sculptor Charles-Henri-Joseph Cordier (1827-1905). Known for his Orientalist works in bronze and marble, Cordier gained inspiration from his visits to Algeria. The male figure of this pair is after a study made during one of these visits.
The figures form a wonderfully contrasting pair. The male bust wears a more sombre, downturned expression, whilst the female smiles almost sleepily. Both faces are expertly carved to achieve a human likeness, and the two figures are similarly dressed in embellished shirts and robes. The patination is exceptional throughout, providing light and shade to the facial features and garments. Gilding can also be seen on the woman’s earring...
