Roman Bust Bronze &Marble Grand Tour Roman Emperor Caracalla, Attr; B. Boschetti
About the Item
A Large Neoclassical and Exceptional Quality Early to Mid 19th Century Roman (Italian), Grand Tour Bronze and Marble Bust of Roman Emperor "Caracalla", attributed to "Benedetto Boschetti". This very Handsome Emperor ruled Rome from (198-217 AD). It was cast and later hand chiseled in dark patinated bronze and depicts a male figure with a furrowed brow, short curly hair, and a closely cropped beard. The head is slightly turned to the left, with deeply set eyes, a prominent nose, and a firmly closed mouth. The curls of the hair are individually modeled, with tight, voluminous ringlets covering the scalp. The beard is finely textured with short, defined strokes.
Draped fabric covers the shoulders and chest, gathered at the right side and secured with a circular fibula. The fabric folds are deeply incised, with varying thicknesses to suggest overlapping layers. The drapery extends down the left shoulder, partially covering the upper chest. The back of the bust is fully modeled, with additional detailing in the hair and drapery. The surface has areas of natural patina development, with green oxidation visible in recessed areas.
The bust is mounted on a cylindrical marble socle with a flared base, carved from breccia marble with a mix of cream, beige, and brown veining. The marble base is polished, with a smooth surface and subtle variations in tone. The bronze bust is securely attached to the base, with the joint concealed within the lower section of the drapery.
