About the Item

A regal bronze with brown patina life size bust on a pedestal by famed American-British sculptor Sir Jacob Epstein. An exquisite example of modern & post-war British art. Circa early 20th century. Sir Jacob Epstein KBE (1880-1959) was an American-British sculptor who helped pioneer modern sculpture. Early in his career, in 1912, The Pall Mall Gazette described Epstein as “a Sculptor in Revolt, who is in deadly conflict with the ideas of current sculpture.” Revolting against ornate, pretty art, he made bold, often harsh and massive forms of bronze or stone. His sculpture is distinguished by its vigorous rough-hewn realism. Avant-garde in concept and style, his works often shocked audiences. Epstein's art can be found all over the world in public institutions and private collections. Highly original for its time, it substantially influenced the younger generation of sculptors such as Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. A unique opportunity to collect an original sculpture by a pioneer of modern British sculpture. From a private collection. Dimensions: 17.25”h x 8”w x 4”d. In very good vintage condition.
