About the Item

The remarkable bronze of "Adam," crouching in fear and shame after being expelled from Eden, is one of the finest nude male bronzes ever sculpted by an American artist. The original was sculpted by Paul Wayland Bartlett in 1896, and is extremely rare. This example was probably cast from an original sculpture many decades ago, given areas of verdigris and signs of age, and is considered "after Bartlett." Its patina is lustrous, and many details -- such as the musculature of Adam's back and his hands and feet, are absolutely beautiful. The signature is not crisp, and there is a portion of the figure's back that does not have the smoothness of the original. Bartlett spent much of his career in France, and is best known for the "Bear Tamer," examples of which can be found at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.

This highly rare bronze of a nude male athlete preparing to left a heavy kettlebell weight was sculpted by an Austrian artist, Franz Seifert, in 1922. Although Seifert is known for his nude figures straining to accomplish physical tasks -- such as carrying a large bucket or splitting a stone -- this sculpture is the only example known to exist. An enigmatic late 19th Century bronze study of a seated female nude leaning on her knees, hiding her face, on integral naturalistic canted rectangular base, signed to one side DALOU above the cracked mirror (facing to the rear), the opposing side marked Susse Fres Edts the rear with Susse Freres pastille flanked by the letters H P and S.
