Dalou was one of the most important artists of the time in France.
together with his friend Rodin
Dalou was born into a family of glove craftsmen. His Protestant parents raised him in secularism and love of the Republic.
Youth
From a very young age, Jules Dalou showed abilities for modeling and drawing, which earned him the attention of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, who in 1852 made him enter the Petite École, the future National School of Decorative Arts, where he followed classes in Horace Lecoq de Boisbaudran.
In 1854 he was admitted to the School of Fine Arts in Paris, where he studied painting in the workshop of Abel de Pujol and sculpture in the workshop of Duret.1 He began to earn a living working for decorators. Thanks to dealing with one of them, his friendship with Auguste Rodin began. Paris was changing, Dalou gained experience working in the capital on important stonemasonry projects, for the construction and decoration of buildings on Parisian avenues, thus he participated in the decoration of the Hotel de La Paiva on the Champs Elysées avenue. He also worked for the Fannière brothers' jewelry workshop.
He participated in the Prix de Rome competition four times and was rejected each time. This made him have some resentment against the official artistic institutions.
