Aime Jules Dalou French Gilt Bronze Figure of a Resting Worker
About the Item
A stunning French Gilt bronze figure of a resting worker by renowned sculptor Aime Jules Dalou (French, 1838-1902) and probably dating from the latter 19th century.
Paris born and renowned Sculptor Aime Jules Dalou was admired for his perceptiveness, execution and unpretentious realism. In 1854, he attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris and his natural skills as a sculptor were quickly recognised, for "he was, technically, one of the most distinguished modellers of his time". In 1861 he exhibited at the Paris Salon. Amidst political strife he fled to England in 1871 and took up a teaching role in London where he spent the next 8 years in excile. He returned to France in 1879 where he produced a number of large and important sculptural works. Today he is widely regarded and collected, and work is held in both public and private collections worldwide.
The stylized figure stands on a rounded base his leg resting against a raised rock. The figure of a man stands with his arms resting on his waist and his head turned sideways. He is dressed simply in a pair of trousers and open neck short sleeve (or rolled up sleeved) shirt. The figure has a gilded bronze finish and is mounted with a foundry mark to the upper base and is impressed BRONZE 5 (probably an edition number) and signed DALOU. The figure is further inscribed ‘Susse Frs Edts Paris’.
Provenance: From the estate and collection of the late Jackie Mann, a respected member of the UK antique trade. Acquired from the UK Art Market.
