About the Item

Art Deco bronze sculpture circa 1930. A bronze girl with a double patina on a cream-colored marble base. Note some wear on the patina. Total height: 23 cm Base width: 8 cm Base depth: 8 cm Base height: 5 cm Weight: 2.2 Kg Alexandre Kelety is a Hungarian sculptor born in Budapest around 1874, although the exact date of his birth is not mentioned in the literature. He emigrated to France after the Second World War to study in Toulouse and then in Paris in order to consolidate his theoretical and technical knowledge in art. He then chose to turn to Modern Art, choosing to focus on the exuberance of style and the pursuit of something luxurious. He was active from 1918 to 1940, but his biography remains mysterious. He remains one of the great creators of sculptures in vogue in the 1920s. The flexibility of forms Alexandre Kelety is strongly influenced by Imre Karoly Simay, his teacher, also Hungarian. Inspired by the latter's art, he produces many animal bronzes. His goal is to create dramatic, sentimental and decorative sculptures. He works with a variety of materials such as bronze and ivory, but also ceramics and painting. The animal theme as well as that of childhood are very present in his works. His chryselephantine statuettes mainly represent dancers and mythological figures. He is in line with Art Deco, whose style he reuses to create everyday objects such as ashtrays or electric lamps. His bronze is often monochrome, with a dark brown patina, but he sometimes adds small touches of gold or color or a marble base. The common characteristic of all his sculptures is a form of grace and flexibility in the human and animal forms that he offers. He details the bodies in such a way as to offer athletic forms that highlight the beauty and strength of the human body ("Chasse à courre" "Pierrot et Pierrette" "Les trois enfants") or the strength and energy ("The release"). The most famous of his sculptures certainly remains this green patina that represents a bust of Jean Mermoz, the famous French aviator, his scarf in the wind. The art of delicacy In the interwar period, Alexandre Kelety exhibited as part of the Salon de la Société des Artistes français, an exhibition that was decisive for his reputation. It is indeed through this medium that young artists become known and this exhibition was a real turning point in his career. In 1927, he exhibited a terracotta bust at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs. In 1925, he participated in the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts on Arthur Goldscheider's stand. His name is often mentioned alongside Demetre Chiparus or Johann Philip Ferdinand Preiss. His work is today highly prized by collectors, his bronzes being considered marvels of precision.

Roland Paris Bronze Art Deco The Clown
By Roland Paris
Located in NANTES, FR
Art Deco bronze with green and brown patina around 1930. Bronze clown on Portor marble base. Signed Roland Paris on the embankment. Notes of micro scratches on the marble. Total height: 53cm Base: 13cm x 46.5cm Weight: 16 Kg Friedrich Richard Roland Paris (March 18, 1894 in Vienna, Austria-Hungary - May 4, 1945 in Swinemünde, Germany) was a German caricaturist, writer of satirical verse, graphic designer, painter and Art Deco sculptor. Roland Paris attended the Grand-Ducal Realgymnasium in Weimar from 1905. From 1909, he was a student at the Saxon Grand-Ducal School of Applied Arts in Weimar. Here, in 1912, he received second and third prizes as well as 25 points in a competition for the design of emblems for student associations, which he continued to produce for two or three years. Some of these works showed the influence of Art Nouveau, others included more modern approaches. In 1912, Paris took a course in sculpture at the Saxon Grand-Ducal School of Art in Weimar with the sculptor Gottlieb Elster. He then went to Munich, where he completed internships with several sculptors. In 1913, he returned to the school of Fine arts in Weimar and studied painting with Walther Klemm. In June 1915 he received his call up order for the Eastern Front of World War I and served first in a commando unit and then in the Air Force Inspectorate (IdFlieg) . After his return in 1919, he settled in Berlin. In 1924 he married Elisabeth Lisl Austen (b. 1897), a dancer at the Théâtre des Westens who modeled most of his female characters; he depicted himself for the facial parts of his male characters. The marriage remained childless. Their shared one-bedroom apartment in the backyard of Xantener Strasse 11 in Berlin-Wilmersdorf was also the Paris Studio, where he designed and made many of his sculptures, as well as graphics and paintings...
