Antique Burmese Bronze Seated Mandalay Buddha with gilt and lacquer finish

About the Item

A fine early gilt lacquered bronze Buddha seated in the padmasana (lotus) position with bhumisparsha mudra. This mudra is depicted with the right hand placed over the knee and the fingertips pointing down towards the earth, to symbolize enlightenment. The Buddha is clothed in a monk’s robe with meticulously carved folds of fabric, leaving the right shoulder exposed. It has a smooth hairline and traditional elongated earlobes with an onion-shaped ushnisha. Its face is serene in contemplation with smiling lips, aquiline nose and downcast eyes. Lacquer & gilt over Bronze Mandalay, Burma, circa 1800s Measures: 20”x27”x32”H (50.8x68.8x81.3cmH).
