"Two Fates" German Bronze Sculpture after the Antique Cast by R. Bellair

About the Item

GRAND TOUR POLYCHROMED BRONZE GROUP OF "TWO FATES" Foundry cachet verso for "R. Bellair & Co, Berlin, Friedrichstr.182" Item # 012JIP09L A good Grand Tour classical bronze group based on the original sculpture in the east pediment of the Parthenon by the Athenian sculptor Phidias while the missing extremities of that group have been re-imagined by the foundry. It captures Clotho and Atropos, two of the three sisters that together with Lachesis are the Three Fates. They are the three that measure, hold and cut short the thread of life running through creation. The same model was executed by Auguste Clésinger with a much more interesting "restoration" of the missing extremities, a sculpture we may still hold in the gallery inventory. The present model is finished in a bole-red polychrome surface patina with relieved highlights throughout, this rich and vibrant under beeswax. It is a gorgeous cabinet bronze for any collector of Grand Tour works. Measurements: 13" W x 7 7/8" H x 3 3/8" D Condition Report: Lower figure is missing a pair of scissors from her hand. Light patina handling wear throughout.
