French 19th Century Louis XVI Style Ormolu Bust Signed Houdon and Frères

About the Item

A striking French 19th century Louis XVI st. ormolu and patinated bronze bust of Diana the Huntress, signed Houdon and Susse Frères. The bust is raised by a striking circular base with a richly chased wrap around berried laurel band and a patinated bronze socle pedestal, with decorative ormolu flutes. The beautiful Diana wears the patinated bronze strap of her quiver across her chest and displays a lovely facial expression. Her hair is tied in an updo accented with a patinated bronze half crescent moon. Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828) A prominent French Neoclassical sculptor born in Versailles. Houdon is famous for his portrait busts and statues of philosophers, inventors and political figures. He was made a Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur in 1804. The Susse Frères firm is a renowned 19th century Parisian foundry. The company is well known for their fine bronze castings with superb chasing. After the death of Pierre-Jules Mène in 1879, the Susse Frères foundry acquired the rights to reproduce his models marked "Susse foundeur éditeur, Paris"
