Italian 19th Century Louis XVI St. Marble, Ormolu, and Terra Cotta Statue
About the Item
An exceptional Italian 19th century Louis XVI st. Terra Cotta, ormolu and Sarrancolin marble statue attributed to Clodion. The statue is raised by it original elegant circular Sarrancolin marble base with delicate recessed designs, fine ormolu rosettes and a striking richly chased mottled wrap around foliate ormolu band. The statue above depicts a beautiful maiden with long hair tied in a bow holding up fresh cut blooming flowers in her hand with two charming putti at her side playing with intricately detailed tied garlands of blooming flowers amidst a cloud like design with a quiver at the base. Wonderful proportions and attention to detail throughout. All original patina
Claude Michel, aka Clodion (1738 – 1814) A renowned French Master sculptor born in Nancy, France. In 1755, Clodion went to Paris and was a pupil of J. B. Pigalle. In 1759 he obtained the grand prize for sculpture at the Académie Royale and in 1762 he went to Rome. His works were frequently exhibited at the Salon. Clodion's renowned works are displayed all over the world.
