The bronze sculpture depicts a minimally dressed, muscular male athlete captured mid-throw of a shot put. It was created in the late 19th century, around 1900, by german sculptor Julius Paul Schmidt-Felling. Schmidt-Felling worked during the mid-to-late 19th century and early 20th century, producing bronze statues across varied subjects including warriors, athletes, blacksmiths, and farmers. This sculpture exemplifies his realist style. The rough base contrasts with the dark patinated bronze figure and contains the artist's engraved signature.
Art Nouveau was emerging during Schmidt-Felling's late career and elements like the athletic theme and fluid contours suggest the new Jugendstil movement's influence, though the overall composition remains grounded in 19th century academic realism. As a german sculptor working around 1900, Schmidt-Felling bridged earlier realistic sculpture and the new decorative, organic Art Nouveau style.

The first foundry was commercially more successful, while the second one was using a more advanced technology of galvanic silver deposition. In 1881 the Esslingen factory was dismantled and its equipment was incorporated into the Geislingen foundry. During the next thirty years WMF experienced a period of rapid expansion, which lasted until the beginning of the World War in 1914. The WMF silver-plated production made this period of time (1880-1914) is extremely popular among western antiques...Category
