Near Life-Sized Italian White Marble Figure of Ceres, After the Antique

About the Item

Near life-sized antique Italian white marble figure of CERES, 19th century, Ceres, known to the Greeks as Demeter, was a goddess of agriculture, fertility, grains, the harvest, motherhood, the earth, and cultivated crops. Depicted here standing tall and resplendent with bold flowing drapery, holding a large sheaf of wheat and a sickle, Her well modelled head and drawn back hair adorned with a headdress of stylized plaited straw, fruit and berries. Figure 55” high, raised on an oak wood plinth 13.75” x 14.25” x 13.75” high Provenance: acquired in 1914 by Mr. O.D. (1867-1918) Le Plateau Montreal, by descent to his children.
