About the Item
Decorate a wine cellar or a wet bar with this elegant matching pair of antique cherub carvings, with child Bacchus god of wine, reprensenting the grape harvest and the enjoyment of wine! Crafted in Italy circa 1850, each colorful chubby boy dressed with glass eyes, stands on a globe form base decorated with geometric motifs. The hand carved young Bacchus are depicted standing up and holding an amphora filled of grapes. The tall sculptures are in excellent condition and adorn a rich painted and polychrome finish with some gilt accents. Dress a mantel, a console or a buffet with this beautiful pair of putti sculptures.
Infant Bacchus figures are commonly portrayed with grapevines and stemmed glassware, as references to wine and drunkenness. Bacchus, known as Dionysus in Greek mythology, is closely associated with wine and is often depicted as the god of the grape harvest, wine making, and the joyous celebrations that accompany the consumption of wine. One of the central myths associated with Bacchus is the discovery or invention of wine. In some versions of the myth, Dionysus is credited with teaching mortals how to cultivate grapes and make wine. This gift was considered a great boon to humanity, as wine became a symbol of pleasure, fertility, and transformation.
