One of two chief attendants of Fudou Myouou (the other being Kongara Doji), the name of Seitaka Doji is a transliteration of Sanskrit "Cetaka", meaning servant, slave, and he is said to personify expedient action. He is most commonly found on the right side of Fudou, together with Kongara Doji on the left, forming the Immovable triad, Fudou Sanzon, the terror of evil doers. Standing at over two feet tall, this 17th century pair of angel candlesticks has been carved out of a beautiful French elm wood. Because elm wood typically has an interlocked grain, it can be quite difficult to carve or split. These candlesticks were produced by a master craftsman in France during the 1600s. Our angels have long, wavy hair that extends past their shoulders. They are wearing long flowing gowns with scalloped collars and half sleeves. The loosely draped robe reaches their ankles, exposing bare feet that stand upon a round base. One leg is also visible from behind the material due to a slit at mid-thigh. Each angel is holding a turned candle holder that has a large wrought iron pricket with a lobed bobeche. In France, this type of candle holder is known as an Ange Céroféraire. Carlo Marcellini (Florence 1644 – 1713) Putto White and green marble 41.5 x 73.5 cm This marble putto carved in high relief, almost a tutto tondo, and set on an elegant green marble background, appears almost naked, sitting on a cloud. His peculiar pose, in adoration, suggests that the work was a part of a larger composition including other figures in devotion. Published in 2007 by Sandro Bellesi in the monograph dedicated to Gioacchino Fortini (pg.155), this beautiful marble putto was included in the catalog of Carlo Marcellini, a prominent figure in the baroque renewal of Florentine art. Born in Florence in 1644, Carlo Marcellini received his artistic education in the city of the lily, specializing in stone sculpture and stucco modeling under the guidance of Bartolomeo Cennini before continuing his studies in Rome in the Accademia Medicea founded by the Grand Duke Cosimo III in order to familiarize some more promising artists with the essential “ taste of Rome ”.
