19th Century Madonna and Child with Souls in Purgatory Papier-Mache Sculpture
Located in Milan, IT
First half of the 19th century
Madonna and Child with souls in Purgatory
Lacquered and gilded papier-mache with polychrome wooden base
cm 96.5 x 37.5 x 28
"At that time I asked the Lord Jesus: 'For whom do I still have to pray?'. Jesus answered me that the following night he would make me known for whom I had to pray. I saw the Custodian Angel, who ordered me to follow him. At a moment I found myself in a foggy place, invaded by fire and, in it, a huge crowd of suffering souls. These souls pray with great fervour, but without effectiveness for themselves: only we can help them. The flames that burned them, they did not touch me. My Guardian Angel did not abandon me for a moment. And I asked those souls what their greatest torment was. And they unanimously answered me that their greatest torment is the ardent desire of God. I read the Madonna who visited the souls of Purgatory. The souls call Mary 'Star of the Sea'. She brings them refreshment ".
(Diary of Sister Faustina Kowalska p. 11)
A Polish religious, Saint Faustina Kowalska (1905-1938) reinterpreted in the pages of her testimony the ancient role of the Virgin as savior and supporter of the souls of Purgatory. The Second Vatican Ecumenical Council established that, assumed into Heaven, the Mother of God should operate a continuous intercession in favor of those children waiting for Paradise who were in the place, quoted for the first time by Pope Gregory the Great...

Early 19th Century English Regency Greek Revival Gilt Carving of a Sphinx
Located in Chicago, IL
From the 1700s through the early 1800s, European aristocrats developed a fascination with ancient Egyptian culture and design that culminated in a full Egyptian Revival. Prominent figures such as Marie Antoinette and Napoleon Bonaparte commissioned rooms decorated with Egyptian motifs. This cultural moment reflects a fascination with a sophisticated civilization of great artists and pharaohs. The Regency era possessed very little knowledge of the Great Pyramids or hieroglyphics, a quality that lent Egyptian art interpretation a compelling air of mystique.
This English Regency period gilt carving depicts a popular figure of borrowed Egyptian motif: the Sphinx. Recognized among educated circles as a symbol of brilliance in the ancient past, the Sphinx was well-known as a mythological creature who destroys those who failed to answer her riddle. Such a piece as this, excellent in detail and craftsmanship, may have once graced the mantle of a gentleman’s study or been exchanged as a gift between British scholars. The beautiful gold surface has been achieved by an artful combination of gilt and gesso; the art enthusiast will appreciate the intricate texture realized in the carving’s hair and tail as well as the delicate detailing of the saddle.
Borrowing from the Egyptians, the Greeks had their own interpretation of the Sphinx. Greek mythology chronicled the Sphinx as being the daughter of Orthous and Chimera or Laius and attributed the riddles, which she proposed, as having been taught to her by the Muses. Crowned with a Grecian diadem and having a refined expression, she evokes an ancient yet reserved intellect.
For the modern-day enthusiast of classical Greek art...

Important 19th Century Sculpture: The Pieta
Located in Madrid, ES
Immerse yourself in the poignant beauty of this significant carved wood and polychrome sculpture depicting the iconic scene of the Pieta. Crafted possibly in Spain during the 19th century, this artwork stands as a striking testament to sacred art and artistic mastery of the era.
The sculpture, executed with exceptional quality, captures the delicacy and devotion of the Pieta scene, where the Virgin Mary cradles the body of Jesus Christ after the crucifixion. Despite some minor losses, as shown in the accompanying photos, these do not significantly diminish the value or beauty of the piece.
Measuring 108x60x55 cm, including the wooden base, this sculpture possesses an imposing presence that will command attention in any space. The expressiveness of the figures and the meticulous attention to detail attest to the sculptor's talent and deep understanding of the religious theme.
Whether as the centerpiece of a sacred art collection or as a standout element in a devotional space, this Pieta sculpture...
