About the Item

Inspired by Rima, the "Jungle Girl" character in the enormously popular novel, "Green Mansions," this sculpture depicts her surrounded by birds and animals who trust and love her, including a mother monkey and baby to her side. The sculptor was Edris Eckhardt, one of America's most important women artists in the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s. Eckhardt was a friend and contemporary of Viktor Schreckengost, and was primarily known for ceramic sculpture in the 1930s and 1940s. This sculpture is a WPA piece created for the Ohio Art Program, and is clearly signed and titled on the bottom. After World War II, she pioneered a number of advances in glass art, winning two Guggenheim Awards and the Louis Comfort Tiffany Fellowship in the 1950s.
