Small wooden Buddha statue from the Edo period in Japan/17th to 19th century

About the Item

We are pleased to present a small wood carving of a flanking Bodhisattva made around the Edo period. This work is thought to be one of the Kannon Bosatsu or Seishi Bosatsu standing on either side of the Amida Triad. (Please refer to the reference image of the Amitabha Triad.) The expression on his face, with his eyelids silently downcast, is timeless and still conveys deep compassion and peace of mind. The soft expression of the face, the well-proportioned posture, and the rippling folds of the robe show the handiwork of a skilled Buddhist sculptor of the time. The overall decoration has been lost, and although it is thought that the original coloring was applied, it has peeled off over time and may have been removed cleanly because of its unsightly appearance in later generations. In addition, the crown above the head and the halo behind it are missing, but the remaining body seems to speak quietly of the passage of time. Both arms are also missing, but it is imagined that it may have once held something symbolic of a bodhisattva, such as a jewel or lotus flower. The texture of the wood has become softened and deeply colored over the years. The wood surface gives off a warmth of wood, and when you hold it in your hand, you suddenly feel a sense of calmness and mysterious presence. When displayed in a room, it blends naturally with contemporary interior design as an appearance that brings tranquility and harmony. Although it is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, it is rich in spirituality and adds a gentle tension to your space. It will be a dignified presence that will gently accompany you wherever you place it, such as in a corner of your study, in an entryway, or on a display shelf. Although it can stand on its own, it is a little unstable, so we recommend that you place a thin felt sticker on the back of the foot when setting it up. It is rare to find a Buddha statue that has a gentle and calm atmosphere, with the grain and carving marks of the wood exposed, rather than a luxurious and gorgeous Buddha statue. It is a Buddha image that is difficult to find even if you want to look for it. We hope you will welcome this small, but surely unique form of “prayer” into your own space. Weight: 78g
