Decorate a lady's office with this elegant antique figure. Sculpted in France, circa 1870, the terracotta composition depicts two young female beauties looking at two love birds. Wonderful details throughout. The sculpture is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a rich patinated clay finish. Signed in the back, Cordier, and listed in the Benezit (see last picture).
Charles Henri Joseph Cordier (1827-1905) was a French sculptor of ethnographic subjects. Cordier was a student of the Beaux-Arts in Paris and entered the workshop of Rude in 1847. Young mother in elaborate Rococo house dress: Ruched wide long skirt, bodice, fitted frilled coat with hood, the upswept hair covered by a high voluminous bonnet with ruched hem and bows, sitting on a splendid Louis XVI style bench and placing her right foot on a stool, beside her the happy spouse in frock coat, waistcoat over frilled shirt and knee breeches with white stockings, both embracing each other at the back and looking down at the baby wrapped in cloth and lying half naked on a cushion on both their laps, the father guiding his right hand to the mother's chin in an affectionate gesture. Behind them a little boy in a playsuit and hat, holding a bowl and blowing soap bubbles with a tube.
The group is based on an oval natural base with sculpted flowers and foliage and gold heightened lateral frieze decoration.

Depiction of the goddess Kybele, the great Phrygian mother of the gods 'Magna Mater', seated with a mural crown on a reclining lion, holding a cornucopia on her lap, symbol of wealth and abundance, behind her standing on a rock a female cupid presenting a key, surrounded by further three cupids with flowers, crops and rake, symbolising agriculture and the cultivation of the earth.
The group is based on an irregular earth and rock base with a gold rim.
Kybele usually wears a crown in the shape of a city wall on her head as an attribute and is depicted in castles, monasteries and baroque gardens, especially in the 18th century. In cycles showing the four elements, she embodies the earth. That is why she is often presented with the sun and moon to her right and left. In the other hand she may carry a staff of office, a sceptre, as a symbol of rulership complementing the mural crown. In the other hand she carries a small kettledrum, which may symbolise the noise of her madness or the festivities held in her honour. Often Kybele rides on a lion or a pair of lions, or she rides on a chariot drawn by two lions. Spikes of corn, poppies, flowers or fruit in bowls may also be shown. wikipwdia.

Looking at Christ like this and thinking about the gruesome way in which He lost His earthly life, the crucifix (in our view) is a symbol of what 'telling people the truth' can lead to. 'The truth does not have many friends' is something I once read. Looking at what is going on in the world today, in most countries that still is the case. However, we feel that we (humans), nevertheless, are still becoming more loving, civilized, empathetic and self-conscious. Mind you, this good size wall crucifix dates from the early 1900s and the cruelties that people did to one another for acting or being different than 'normal' in those days, in most cases were far worse than what we see in this day and age. Looking at Christ on the cross with this in mind, we have come along way and we are slowly, but surely evolving in the right direction. Maybe it is just some of our 'leaders' who are lacking behind. Christ on the cross should therefor also be a reminder of someone who has lived and foreseen all this and who should therefor always be a beacon of hope and light when things are not going our way, yet. What attracted us most in this work of religious art are the quality details of His anatomy and the warm patina of this finely carved corpus. The sculpted figurine is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a rich patinated finish. Small dent on the dog's back (see last picture).
Victor Rousseau (1865-1954) was a Belgian sculptor and medalist. Rousseau was of Walloon heritage and descended from a line of stonemasons. He began carving stone at age 11, working at the site of the Law Courts of Brussels, designed by architect Joseph Poelaert. He later apprenticed under sculptor Georges Houtstont, and took classes at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels.
A winning competition entry for the Prix Godecharle in 1890 gave Rousseau the chance to travel in England, Italy, and two full years in France, after which he returned to the atelier of Belgian sculptor and teacher Charles van der Stappen...
