Looking at Christ like this and thinking about the gruesome way in which He lost His earthly life, the crucifix (in our view) is a symbol of what 'telling people the truth' can lead to. 'The truth does not have many friends' is something I once read. Looking at what is going on in the world today, in most countries that still is the case. However, we feel that we (humans), nevertheless, are still becoming more loving, civilized, empathetic and self-conscious. Mind you, this good size wall crucifix dates from the early 1900s and the cruelties that people did to one another for acting or being different than 'normal' in those days, in most cases were far worse than what we see in this day and age. Looking at Christ on the cross with this in mind, we have come along way and we are slowly, but surely evolving in the right direction. Maybe it is just some of our 'leaders' who are lacking behind. Christ on the cross should therefor also be a reminder of someone who has lived and foreseen all this and who should therefor always be a beacon of hope and light when things are not going our way, yet. What attracted us most in this work of religious art are the quality details of His anatomy and the warm patina of this finely carved corpus. Place this tall patinated sculpture on a console or a buffet! Crafted in Belgium in 1932, the metal statue depicts a young boy eating his bowl of soup with dog watching with envy. The figurine has numerous marking to prove authentication. It is signed on the base by the artist "Rousseau". The sculpted figurine is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a rich patinated finish. Small dent on the dog's back (see last picture).
Victor Rousseau (1865-1954) was a Belgian sculptor and medalist. Rousseau was of Walloon heritage and descended from a line of stonemasons. He began carving stone at age 11, working at the site of the Law Courts of Brussels, designed by architect Joseph Poelaert. He later apprenticed under sculptor Georges Houtstont, and took classes at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels.
A winning competition entry for the Prix Godecharle in 1890 gave Rousseau the chance to travel in England, Italy, and two full years in France, after which he returned to the atelier of Belgian sculptor and teacher Charles van der Stappen...

Behind them a little boy in a playsuit and hat, holding a bowl and blowing soap bubbles with a tube.
The group is based on an oval natural base with sculpted flowers and foliage and gold heightened lateral frieze decoration.

Knud Carl Edvard Kahn (1880 - 1969) was a Danish painter, draftsman and ceramic sculptor. He was the nephew of the landscape painter, Vilhelm Kahn, and was educated at the Kunstakademiet and Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler in 1904. He worked for the Royal Porcelain Factory, and a period with Herman Kahler in Naestved. He continued the tradition from the Fynbos and focused on animals and their movements as well as on the play of light in paintings...
