18th Century Italian Fragment with Fossil Agate Coral and a Silver Leaf Shell
About the Item
Sculptural 18th century Italian candlestick top fragment with polished agate coral and a coordinating silver-leaf shell.
The hand-carved, 18th century silver candlestick top originally came from a candlestick from a church in Tuscany. It is mounted with fossil agate coral which is Florida's state stone. It is known for its unique formation that can take place over 20 million years. It's a natural gemstone that is created when coral is gradually replaced with agate. These then go through a 48-hour polishing process to achieve the effect.
The piece is put together by Jean O'Reilly Barlow, the artist and creative director of Interi. The date of manufacture reflects when she transformed the piece and the period shows that the Italian fragment is originally 18th century.
The Italian church candlestick top artifact, agate coral, and silver-leaf are put together in a miniature sculptural form - creating a piece that appears to have evolved together over time. Interpreting the past to create a piece entirely original, evolving in its own right.
