About the Item

An antique Minton & Co (stamped) glazed encaustic tile attributed to A.W.N Pugin. This 6 inch square tile is adorned with the monogram ‘IHS' in bold text in buff clay on a deep red terracotta ground, much like the version on display in the V&A museum, London. The gothic revival designer A.W.N. Pugin, responsible for this striking tile and others of its likeness, reputedly made drawings for tiles during his many journeys on the night train from London to Staffordshire, while engaged in works for the Earl of Shrewsbury. Dating to circa 1860, this tile originates from Pugin’s studio Alton Towers, Shrewsbury’s Seat, now making for a perfect decorative piece for display in a period cottage or townhouse looking to add style and charm.
