Reclaimed Christopher Russell Tile Panel ex Chris Blanchett Collection

About the Item

An unusual and striking 6 tile panel by ceramicist Christopher Russel, originally made as a maquette for Swanage Library, England, and later acquired by collector and expert Chris Blanchett for his collection. This panel is impressively decorated with glass fusion to depict a striking stylised dove on a vibrant red background, backed onto board and mounted on a custom made steel display stand - such craftsmanship has created a unique and impressive display piece perfect for a sideboard or wall decoration. The artist's monogram can be seen to the bottom left corner. We also have a black version available. Please enquire for details. Christopher Russell (1931-2018) Christopher Russell is known for his dynamic pieces, inventing new forms and surfaces to discover the limits of ceramics. This tile panel was a part of a larger project once housed in Swanage library, a town on the south coast of England where Russell set up the Purbeck Pottery at just 20 years old, after training at the Poole College of Art. He went on to create a range of work from simple pots to more individual pieces before eventually selling to Liberty's and Heals, London. But he didn’t stop there -- the entrepreneurial ceramicist later travelled to Barbados and started the Christopher Russell Pottery with the backing of the Barbados Development Board, where he often incorporated sea-washed glass into glazed ceramic tiles, much like this one. In 1965, Russell created a circular tiled column of stylised doves in various shapes and sizes situated in the centre of Swanage library. Each tile was fused onto the surface to create a wonderful, vibrant decoration for locals and visitors to admire. Now his work can be found on display in the V&A museum, London, and amongst vibrant collections such as Chris Blanchett's. Chris Blanchett Collector and specialist in tiles and architectural ceramics, Chris Blanchett started his passion for tiles in the 70s and published books internationally about tiles, mosaics, brick, terracotta and stone. His name grew more recognised as his career progressed, becoming committee member of the Tiles & Architectural Ceramics Society, honorary Life Member of Tile Heritage Foundation and adviser to the Church Recorders section of the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS). Throughout his career he acquired various tiles he thought to be impressive, such as this one, to form his stunning collection. Now these unusual and unique pieces are looking to be appreciated in new homes. Additional information Each tile within the panel is 10.8cm2 (4.25 in2)
