"The Snake Priest" by Charles M. Russell

$7,600

About

Charles M. Russell (1864-1926) and Frederic Remington (1861-1909) were the two leading artists to portray the American West. The affluent Remington studied art at Yale and, though he did travel through the west periodically, even working for a time as a cowboy in Kansas, he mostly created his works from notes and photographs, at some remove (as in New York City) from the actual frontier. Russell, in contrast, lived in the midst of his subject matter, being a resident and sympathetic observer of the frontier for most of his life. He had a famously intimate knowledge of Native American culture, learned while living among the Káínawa. Russell, in his painting and sculpture, attempted to depict the Native American from a Native American point of view. "The Snake Priest" is a well-loved bronze sculpture by Russell, and even appears as the cover photograph of one of the best books about Russell. It depicts the Hopi Chief Lomanakshu, a member of the Mishognovi Snake Fraternity. Signed "C.M. RUSSELL" and dated 1914 in the bronze, with B. Zoppo Foundry, N.Y. stamped on the side of the base below the figure.
