About the Item

This small-scale stabile by Jacques Jarrige is part of a rare trio of miniature kinetic sculptures in brass, each exploring the delicate tension between movement, balance, and form. Composed of four individual brass elements, the sculpture is designed so that each piece balances precisely atop the next at a single point—creating a vertical cascade of suspended motion, frozen in a moment of precarious harmony. Though compact in scale, the piece carries the same visual dynamism and gestural energy found in Jarrige’s larger mobiles. Each element is hand-cut and hammered from brass, giving the surfaces a subtly faceted texture that catches and reflects the light, adding to the sense of vitality and flux. The parts are arranged in a carefully calibrated dance—lightly resting one upon the other—giving the work a feeling of weightlessness despite its solid material. As with all of Jarrige’s work, the line takes center stage. Here, the sculpture reads like a drawing in space: an upward rhythm of curves and angles that invites the viewer to engage from multiple viewpoints. The interplay of solid brass and open air creates a dialogue between mass and void, while the sculpture’s balance on a single axis heightens the impression of spontaneous yet intentional movement. One of a kind and signed by the artist, this piece embodies Jarrige’s ability to distill motion and emotion into pure form. It offers a contemplative presence—both playful and precise—and serves as a sculptural meditation on gravity, gesture, and the poetry of balance.
