Chinese Ming Dynasty Hand Carved Stone Monkey Sculpture with Infant Monkey
About the Item
A 19th century Chinese Ming dynasty hand carved stone monkey sculpture. This Chinese sculpture features a monkey figure, sitting on a rock formation, holding a square item, perhaps a box, in a lively and caring gesture. Upon closer inspection, one will notice the lovely infant monkey that is sleeping in the front, next to the paw of the adult monkey. This sculpture was intended to adorn the top of a stone pillar. Carved in high-relief, the monkey seems to be emerging from the rock formation as the body is partially carved. The base on which it is raised is adorned with delicate scrollwork motifs. This Chinese 19th century Ming dynasty hand carved stone monkey sculpture will be a charming decorative accent in any room, whether placed in a foyer, living room or on a patio.

Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion, is portrayed here as a beatific figure seated upon a raised lotus pedestal over waves. Guanyin is dressed in heavy robes, and wears an elaborate headdress. The small figure of Amitabha Buddha in the headdress positively identifies this figure as Guanyin. Guanyin rests one hand in his lap, holding a cup of pure water said to be able to alleviate all suffering.
