About the Item

A large and heavy Vindefontaine Beverage Fountain, Normandy, France, circa 1840 – 1850. Referred to as a fountain, this vessel was used for the storing and serving of water or wine. Glazed in a treacle glazed earthenware of brown and black with a raised Kaolin clay decoration in an ivory color, the body is decorated with stylized daisy flowers and stems in light relief. Finished with twin ermine handles, and a capped head for a lid. The body is flat backed and sits on a circular footing. The pour spout is at the front near the base, and would have been corked. Vindefontaine is a former commune in the Manche department in Normandy, north-western France. This active pottery center was known for its production of unusual objects, especially butter pots, pitchers, and the fountains with brown glazing decorated with an ivory colored kaolin clay. Production stopped in 1894 following a massive fire that burned a large part of the villages where the workshops were located. 24.75 in. H x 12.25 in. W x 7.25 in. Located in Philadelphia, PA
A rustic hand hammered Brass Milk Jug from Normandy, France, Circa 1850 A large piece of hand made brass used to transport milk from the country dairy to the home, often by donkey. The outer body shows the textured surface left by the hammering technique used in the making of this piece. The jug is formed of two pieces of brass meeting at the mid-section with a decorative joint. With the original lid. The lid has a wide collar that sits inside the top of the jug, keeping the contents from spilling during transport. A thick handle is securely attached to the body. A Rustic European 18th century French faience fountain with spigot
Located in Leesburg, VA
Anonymous Mid-18th century; probably Moustiers or Nevers, France Faience and brass Approximate size: 12.25 (h) x 9 (w) x 6.25 (d) inches The present dispenser was either used as a water or wine cooler or possibly for washing hands. The original lid is lost-to-time, yet its provincial beauty remains attractive and sublime. The present example—baked with white enamel and decorated with a lovely hand-painted polychrome lattice and floral theme—is warm, elegant and rustic. The curving linear form of the flowers subtly recall the influence of Japan’s Kakiemon style present in France during the Rococo period yet is still indebted to the earlier influence of Italy’s prolific maiolica workshops. This fountain would serve as an elegant addition for display on an oak or distressed wood console table...
