Aldo Londi for Bitossi Rimini Blue Tall Lidded Jar, 1960s

About the Item

A striking and uncommon 1960s Rimini Blue tall ceramic jar with lid by Aldo Londi for Bitossi. Stylized apothecary jar form, with a gently tapered body, bulbous neck, and domed lid with finial. Very handsome and quintessentially-sixties paisley pattern with finely done hand-inscribed lines and dots throughout. Signature cobalt and cerulean blue glaze accented by cool-hued emerald green, which also adorns the interior. From Bitossi’s website describing the Rimini Blue pattern: “Londi channels his creative impulses into meticulous stylistic and production research, as in the case of the iconic Rimini Blu [Italian spelling] series, produced continuously since 1959. From this moment on, the surface texture, represented by different motifs engraved with a stencil, will always have the same graphic characteristics. A decoration composed of minute, dense marks that create a frieze, a fantastic roundabout of abstract geometric elements that chase each other endlessly, enhanced by quick touches of color that the decorator fixes under the blue and that, after firing, magically reproduce the play of light reflecting in the sea.” “MADE IN ITALY” debossed on bottom alongside “69/1B” hand-painted in glaze. Diameter listed is at the widest spot. Diameter of unglazed bottom ring is 4.75 in.

About Bitossi (Manufacturer) Like a Fellini movie, the ceramics of this famed Italian company embody a creative spectrum that ranges from the playful and earthy to the high-minded and provocative. Based in Florence, Bitossi Ceramiche draws on craft traditions that date back to the 1500s. These find expression in the artisanal vases and animal figures by the firm’s longtime art director Aldo Londi, as well as the colorful, totemic vessels designed by the high priest of postmodernism, Ettore Sottsass. The company was incorporated by Guido Bitossi in 1921, though the family began making art pottery in the mid-19th century. In the 1930s, Londi came aboard, bringing with him a mindset that respected time-honored craft, yet looked also to the future. On the one hand, Londi’s perspective fostered the making of Bitossi’s popular whimsical animal figures, hand-shaped and -carved and finished in a rich azure glaze known as “Rimini Blue.” But with his other hand, Londi reached out to thoughtful, experimental designers such as Sottsass. Starting in the 1950s, some 20 years before he founded the Memphis Postmodern design...
