Glazed Ceramic Water Jar with Relief Decoration of Phoenix and Foo Lions

About the Item

This large Vietnamese ceramic storage jar, likely from the late 19th to early 20th century, showcases hand-applied decoration under a feldspathic ash glaze. The bulbous ovoid form is typical of Martaban jars produced in central Vietnam (then known as Annam), used historically for transporting and storing water or fermented goods. Encircling the vessel are raised decorative motifs depicting a phoenix in flight and a procession of fu lions among stylized trees—each rendered with fluid energy in cobalt blue, mossy green, and iron-brown glaze. A series of applied lugs below the neck suggest the jar may once have been secured with a lid or ropes during transport. The glaze shows attractive runs, pooling, and intentional drips, enhancing the jar’s tactile and visual depth. Notable for its robust proportions and vivid palette, this vessel offers strong decorative appeal in interiors blending Asian antiquities, wabi-sabi minimalism, or rustic European charm. The unglazed foot and interior are consistent with utilitarian stoneware of the period. Visible kiln scars, glaze pops, and base wear affirm its age and function. A compelling accent for use as a floor vessel, display object, or centerpiece in a curated ceramics collection.
