Mid 20th C. Kutani Style French Porcelain Lidded Ginger Jars - A Pair
Located in Morristown, NJ
20th c., a pair of Japanese Kutani style porcelain lidded jars, stamped on Porcelaine de Paris underside of foot. The mark indicates the piece was produced in the 1970's. The jars are decorated in deep orange, tangerine and gold motifs on a white background. On one side, both jars have matching decoration depicting a scroll showing a pastoral scene. On the other side, each jar has a seperate floral depiction; one including bamboo. Both are highly decorative. Founded 1773 by Jean-Baptiste Locre, Porcelaine de Paris, was one of the first manufactures to use the Chinese secret of porcelain. It immediately aimed for the luxury trade, selling to the Royal Courts of Europe. After surviving the French Revolution, Porcelaine de Paris steadily produced tableware as well as purely decorative pieces, receiving orders from all over Europe. Productivity was astonishing, creating one new model every day over 30 years! Around 1830, Jean-Marx Clauss, a German-born potter bought a building at Rue de la Pierre-Levee, where he took over Locre's activity. M. Achille Bloch...

Sırlı Küp (Turkish Glazed Jar - Medium)
Located in Ojai, US
This medium glazed küp was likely used to store cheese by generations of families in the Levant. The design is similar to jugs used to carry water, wine, or other liquids (as cheese is traditionally stored in its brine). Glazing, a traditional technique on pottery wheels in Konya and Isparta, is as functional as it is beautiful. The glaze provides a protective and hygienic layer, making these objects optimal vessels for storing food staples and preserving delicacies. Cheese is a staple in most Turkish breakfasts today, with a fascinating history springing from the Fertile Crescent: the region of Southwest Asia that includes portions of present-day Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. Around 8000 BCE, the first humans to keep livestock began firing pottery that could store dairy products in the warm climate. In this process, they discovered that they could use ceramic strainers...

Mid-Century French Decorative Vase by Albert Thiry (circa 1960s)
Located in London, GB
Mid-century decorative vase by French ceramicist, Albert Thiry (circa 1960s). A gentle, creamy-white glaze encompasses the exterior of the vase topped at the lip by a grassy green with touches of brown. Covering the piece you will find a stunning, large thistle and its foliage. Both visually appealing and tactile, the piece would make an excellent addition to your home or workspace. In very good overall condition. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. Upon request a video of the piece will be provided. Signed: 'Thiry' on the base. About the Artist: Albert Thiry (1932-2009) was born in Nice, France. His family moved to Vallauris where he spent most of the school holidays in the potteries; in 1956 he was taken on as an assistant decorator with an opportunity to make his own pieces. Albert and his wife, Pyot, set up their own pottery in 1961. Their standard production, in Vallauris clay with added grog to emphasise rusticity, resulted in delightful pieces both highly elaborate and utilitarian. Thiry's reputation continues to grow which is reflected in current auction...
