Rare Danish L. Hjorth Large Lidded Jar Oxblood Red Glaze Man & Dog Motif ca 1930

About the Item

Rare and large lidded jar from the Danish ceramic studio L. Hjorth. Most likely made ca 1930s. The jar features stylized figurines in ornamental movements and reminds of a mythological scene. The handle on top of the lid is shaped as a stylized lion. The jar shows a dark red glaze with green elements. The design of the jar is attributed to artist Gertrud Kudielka (1896-1984). She is known for her figurative and fabulating style. Kudielka was born in the capital of Mähren, Olomouc, which at that time was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The World War I made it difficult for her to acquire an artistic education but she visited various schools, among them the Academies of Art in Berlin, Weimar and Copenhagen and workshops several places in Europe. She came to the Hjorth ceramic workshop on the Danish island Bornholm for the first time in 1930 and stayed there until 1931, then again from 1934 to 1936 and from 1938 to 1939. Finally she returned after World War 2 and stayed at Hjorth's workshop from 1949 until she retired in 1964. The lidded jar is most likely made by her when she stayed at the Hjorth workshop in the 1930s. The jar is fully handmarked on bottom "L. Hjorth" (for the workshop) and stamped with the stag symbol which is the emblem for the Hjorth workshop. The jar is in a very good vintage condition. It shows no chips, cracks, crazing or repairs height with lid: 29 cm (11.42") height without lid: 24,7 cm (9.72") diameter: 16 cm (6.30")
