About the Item

This late 18th century object made of Blue John, the famous stone mined in only one part of England, is a very rare form of feldspar. Popular in the late 18th century and early 19th century for table and mantel objects most often seen mounted with gilt metal parts or on alabaster bases, the stone was almost mined out of existence but for a very few small thin veins. The stone runs from a tan gold thru to a rich purple veining and is crystalline in is make up. Objects are mostly made up of many pieces put together as it was formed in shallow veins making it hard to have large objects made without piecing many together This chalice an unusual object in its self is actually carved from one piece which is actually very striated showing all the possible ranges of the stone to its best advantage. Damaged and then rebuilt with the remaining pieces to create an artifact incomplete but thought-provoking. The chalice has been artistically mounted on a custom Lucite base giving it a museum quality and allowing light to play through the veining. This would be very interesting as an addition to a collection of Blue John or as an addition to a collection of ancient and unusual objects
