Large Wedgwood Jasperware Jardiniere

About the Item

The body of this large Wedgwood jardiniere has been dipped in a light blue Jasperware and decorated with applied sprigs done in a white clay. The sprigs are made when clay is pressed into a very shallow mould, gently teased out, and then carefully applied by hand to the body of the jug, before the piece is fired and glazed. The sprigged decoration sits between two friezes, and is divided into three vignettes separated by trees. As well as classical figures there are winged cherubs, a cupid and pots and baskets of flowers. All together there are twenty such sprigs around the body. The top frieze consists of laurel leaves and fruit, whilst the lower frieze is acanthus leaves. It measures 235 mm (9.5 inches) in height, and 260 mm (10.25 inches) in diameter. The shape is number 1061, which was introduced in around 1878. There is a small chip to the underside of the rim that measures 12 mm x 5 mm (.5 of an inch x .25 of an inch). The impressed marks indicate that it was probably potted in June 1896.

A Wedgwood jardiniere with lilac and sage details on a white jasperware ground. Jasperware is perhaps the quintessential Wedgwood clay body and is even considered by some to be a ceramic development on par with porcelain. Originally developed in the 1770s as dyed stoneware bodies (the most ubiquitous of which is pale blue) with applied white figurative decoration in imitation of cameos from the Ancient World, jasperware quickly expanded to a plethora of colorways as per Wedgwood innovation standards. This jardiniere, with lilac and sage decoration on white jasperware ground, is part of Wedgwood’s tricolor jasperware...
