19th century, Pair of Polychrome Imari Porcelain Vases on Gilt Bronze Bases Size H 40 (H 33 vase only) x W 18 max cm The pair of vases, of cylindrical and trumpet shape, has been realized in porcelain imari, painted in polychrome with characteristic floral decorations, on the tones of the red and blue. In the central part, on white background, are represented birds in flight. Imari porcelain is the name by which Western collectors define Japanese porcelain objects made in the city of Arita, in the former province of Hizen northwest of the island of Kyūshū. Arita’s furnaces were at the heart of the Japanese porcelain industry. There were produced objects designed for export, which departed to Europe from the port of imari. The vases are mounted on a quadrangular base in gilded bronze and finely chiselled, made in France around the mid-nineteenth century, in Louis XVI style. These elegant and refined vases, distinctly decorative, can be placed over a chest of drawers, a console or a table, displayed in pairs or individually.
