Temple Bell Pot with Copper Band and Black Lacquer

About the Item

Antique copper finish on copper band Hand repousse´ Black lacquer Contemporary Limited Edition Chinese lacquer is a highly regarded art form and the earliest example dates back to the Shang Dynasty, circa 1600-1100 B.C. The term lacquer refers to the name of the substance and the technique. Lacquer is a translucent sap from trees (rhus verniciflua) that are indigenous to East Asia. Lacquer is a laborious and time-consuming process. After it is tapped from the trees, lacquer needs to be boiled and strained to rid of impurities and prepare it as a coating. The lacquer technique is to apply in thin layers multiple times, waiting for each layer to dry for 24 hours before the next application. Lacquer dries in high humidity and it is crucial that the right amount of lacquer is applied. Each piece is individually crafted and is unique. Natural imperfections and inclusions may show on the piece.
