Minton Pair of Porcelain Vases - Urns, Pâte-sur-Pâte by Harry Hollins, 1873-1891

About the Item

On offer is a sublime and rare pair of vases or urns with covers, made by Minton between 1873 and 1891, which was the Victorian era. The vases have a tall and slender shape and sublime pâte-sur-pâte decorations by Harry Hollins, who worked with the famous Louis Solon. Minton was one of the pioneers of English china production alongside other great potters such as Spode, Davenport, Ridgway, Coalport and others. They were located in Staffordshire and were known specifically for their wonderfully fine white bone china and bright colours; there is a colour called "Minton Blue" which is a fresh azure blue that was very fashionable during the Victorian era. Throughout the different phases of its existence, the factory made top quality creamware, porcelain, majolica and ultimately the finest parian porcelain. Minton excelled in their decorations, pâte-sur-pâte and gilt work; these were often executed by artists who came from the Sèvres factory in France and brought their skills with them. These vases are in the tall and slender shape number 1013, with small daisy-covered ring handles on top of the shoulder, draped in sculpted ribbons. They have a peacock blue ground with a broad dark brown band. The brown band is covered in an intricate arabesque decoration of sublime pâte-sur-pâte work with flowers, foliage, and a cameo on each vase showing a cherub on a sky blue ground. Off the pâte-sur-pâte bands hang gracious festoons in gilt and pâte-sur-pâte. The finials of the rather simple covers are gilded flower buds. The pâte-sur-pâte decorations are signed with the initials H.H., for Henry (better known as Harry) Hollins. Pâte-sur-pâte is a technique by which layers (pâtes) upon layers of slip are laid on top of a parian body ground, creating extraordinarily finely sculpted forms. The technique came to Minton via Louis Solon, a French refugee who had learned the skill at the famous Sèvres factory. Sèvres worked with a hard paste body, and when Minton had developed their famous parian body, Solon realised that he could greatly improve on the technique using the very excellent English porcelain body. He brought Minton great fame with his creations and trained several others, among them Alboin Birks and Harry Hollins, who joined Minton in 1871 and created these vases. The vases are marked with the round crowned Mintons mark in gilt, which was used between 1873 and 1891. CONDITION REPORT The vases are in near-perfect condition with no structural damage or repairs, and hardly any wear. One vase has a small hardly visible gilt touch up on both the foot and the top rim. There is a small firing crack in one of the sculpted ribbons - this is from production. There is a small flake off one of the pâte-sur-pâte details, possibly from production. Please feel free to ask for more pictures! Antique British porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. British makers were also known for their experimentation, and sometimes this resulted in technically imperfect results. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker's recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger.
