Pair of Wedgwood Black Basalt Urns Made in England circa 1820
By Wedgwood
Located in Katonah, NY
We are pleased to offer this exquisite pair of Wedgwood black basalt covered urns made in the early 19th century. An exact pair can be found in the Dwight and Lucille Beeson Wedgwood Collection at the Birmingham Museum of Art. The urns are decorated with scenes showing neoclassical figures in oval medallions. They are further decorated with floral festoons and neoclassical goat head handles (see images). The top each urn is pierced so that the room can be scented with potpourri. Made in the beginning of the 19th century the covered urns stand 14 inches tall. While we are always looking for pieces of this caliber to add to our collection of fine black basalt, these urns are particularly wonderful, and we are excited that we were able to acquire them. When we purchased them we also purchased a pair with the same decoration on matching wood stands. We've listed three pairs of Wedgwood black basalt urns...
