About the Item

This exceptional late 19th century porcelain cabinet vase was hand painted at the Dresden based studio of Georg Heufel & Co. The artist signed vase has a slightly flared cylindrical form and features the image of a blue-eyed maiden with rosy cheeks who is wearing a pink floral garland in her blond curls. She is dressed in a light blue off-the-shoulder gown with coral-colored fabric draped around her waist. The artist has captured the maiden in the midst of gathering flowers and has posed her standing next to a tall rose bush. The young woman holds a small collection of blossoms in her right hand as she prepares to snap another stem between the fingers of her left hand. An overturned woven wicker basket rests in the grass by her feet, waiting to be filled with flowers. A brown-haired putto garbed in rich purple cloth observes the maiden from his nearby perch on a stone pillar. The decoration on the remainder of the vase includes a continuation of the outdoor scene. The landscape features lush green fields, tall leafy trees, and distant purple hills, all of which are under a blue sky studded with clouds. The upper and lower parts of the vase are painted in purple luster and also carry raised gilt and white enamel accents. The top is encircled with a curvilinear leafy vine interspersed with large leaves, all of which are bordered by large a row of raised gilt beads. The lower portion also bears a series of large pendant-style leaves interspersed with delicate coiled tendrils and white enamel beads. There are additional gilt and enamel details at the bottom with an additional band of raised gilt beads. The vase is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. As an antique, the piece shows signs of age consisting of losses to some of the gilt and enamel beads that are noted for accuracy. The piece stands 10" tall and is 3" across the mouth. The foot is 2.875" across and bears a hand painted Heufel & Co mark consisting of a triangle with the letter "H" along with "Dresden". The vase weighs 1lb 1oz. This expertly decorated porcelain vase displays beautifully and would be a fantastic addition to a collection of hand painted Dresden porcelain or works equally well as a stand-alone decorative accent. A gorgeous piece!

Antique Rookwood Pottery Hand Painted Vessel Gorham Engraved Silver Decoration
By Rookwood Pottery Co., Gorham
Located in Cincinnati, OH
This late 19th century glazed earthenware mug was crafted in the studios of Cincinnati Ohio's renowned Rookwood Pottery Company and has a traditional form with an ear-shaped handle having a thumb rest. The exterior of the piece is finished in standard glaze and features hand painted decoration executed by highly regarded artist William Purcell McDonald (1864-1931). The decor has an appealing wine harvest theme consisting of grape vines that snake across the surface. The vines are studded with leaves in various shades of green along with two dangling clusters of plump reddish grapes. The silver decoration covers the handle and rim and includes a series of large etched foliate scrolls and flowers that extend across the body. There is also an eye-catching latticed area that provides a strong visual contrast with the gentle curving motifs found on the other parts of the silver overlay. The underside of the mug has an impressed RP mark along with shape 422 and the letter W. It also carries the incised initials of the artist - W. P. McD - and the letter L. The underside of the silver foot rim is stamped Gorham Manufacturing Co. along with a hand engraved mark reading S 1274 S. This highly collectible Rookwood silver...
