About the Item

Apulian Red-Figure Volute Krater Circa 4th Century BCE An extraordinary artifact of Ancient Greek history, this Apulian red-figure volute krater is an exceptional rarity. Dating to the 4th century BCE, this krater stands as a masterwork of Classical art that exemplifies the sophisticated artistic traditions of Magna Graecia. The volute krater held profound significance in ancient Greek culture, functioning simultaneously as a ceremonial vessel and as a canvas for important mythological narratives. Originally designed to mix wine and water during religious and social ceremonies, these monumental vessels showcased the technical mastery of their creators through intricate painted scenes depicting gods, heroes and members of society's elite. This remarkable example was created in Greek-occupied Southern Italy, where artisans in the Apulian region developed their distinctive red-figure ceramic tradition. The vessel presents a sophisticated composition featuring a seated woman within an Ionic naiskos—a shrine-like architectural structure typically reserved for divine figures. She holds an open cista (toiletry box) while attendants offer mirrors and ceremonial objects, suggesting themes of beauty, divinity and social status. The reverse displays draped figures flanking a stele adorned with taeniae (decorative ribbons), elements that reinforce the vessel's ceremonial function. Objects from ancient Greece represent extraordinary rarities in today's market. Most have been destroyed over the millennia, with the finest surviving examples housed in the world's leading museums. Similar vases of such exceptional complexity, scale and condition to ours reside in prestigious institutional collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the British Museum. This remarkable vase also comes with distinguished provenance, having been formerly in the collection of the Honorable Michael Astor (1916-1980), a member of one of the most influential Anglo-American dynasties of the 20th century. 21 3/4" high x 13" wide x 11" deep Provenance: The Hon.
