Danish Art Nouveau Large Planter by L. Hjorth Ceramic Abstract Ornament, 1910s

About the Item

Large ceramic planter from the Danish ceramic studio Lauritz Hjorth. Manufactured ca 1910s to 1920s. The planter is made from stoneware and features a hand painted abstract onrmental decoration in the modern style of the time, Skønvirke, the Danish interpretation of Art Nouveau. The style was inspired by motifs and organic movements from nature and was a reaction against the historicism with its copying of historical styles. The decor is attributed to Johanne Hjorth who was very inspired by the British designer William Morris and also by the Danish designer Thorvald Bindesbøll. The decoration is in rust brown, ochre and black on the sand colored clay. Fully marked on bottom: L Hjorth Denmark stag symbol and 70 (model number). Measurements Height: 16,8 cm (6.61") Diameter: 23 cm (9.06") Diameter opening: 18,5 cm (7.28")

    Wear consistent with age and use. Very good vintage condition. Tiny fleabite on top of rim which shows as an almost white spot. No cracks, crazing or repairs.
