About the Item

A rare and impressively-sized vase by Karl Drerup (1904-2000) for Vontury. The vessel depicts a hand-painted interpretation of Europa and the Bull. The hand-thrown body is a bit organic in its shape--not totally round, which demonstrates that this vase was not mass-produced. Although all Drerup's vases for Vontury are rare, this is the only example we have ever seen of this design. The pink coloration is also highly unusual--other Drerup Vontury pieces are almost exclusively in neutrals. The vase is signed KD to the lower right of the painted decoration and is stamped with VONTURY, USA on the underside. Condition is very good to excellent. There are no cracks or chips, only a few small, insignificant glaze-pops from when the vase was made and slight wear commensurate with age. Born in Borghorst, Germany in 1904, Drerup earned a master's degree in graphic arts, working under Hans Meid at the Academy in Berlin in 1926. He then traveled to Italy to study painting with Felice Carena at the Academy in Florence. He immigrated to New York City in 1937. Known mostly as an enamelist, Drerup also was an an accomplished painter, ceramist and engraver. His work is in major collections including The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, The Currier Gallery of Art in Manchester, The Museum of Fine Arts in Dallas, the State of New Hampshire's Living Treasures Collection and museums in Los Angeles, Wichita, Newark and the Smithsonian Institution.
