Bio:
Heinrich Meister (1894–1972) was a Swiss ceramic artist and co-founder of the renowned Meister & Co. art pottery workshop. Active from 1920 to 1961, the workshop was located in Dübendorf-Stettbach, near Zurich.
Key facts about Heinrich Meister and his work:
Workshop and partners: In 1920, Meister, an architecture student, teamed up with Josef Kövessi to establish the workshop. With financial backing from Meister's uncle, the company was formalized as Meister & Cie. in 1921.
Collaborators: In 1923, ceramic painter Gertrud Zingg joined the company, later marrying Heinrich Meister and leading the painting department.
Style evolution: The workshop's output evolved over its decades of operation, influenced by major art movements.
Early period: Initially inspired by the popular folk art and faience styles of the Heimberg-Steffisburg region, the workshop later embraced a more modern aesthetic in line with the Neue Sachlichkeit ("New Objectivity") movement.
Heimatstil and folk art revival: By the late 1930s, the company was also producing ceramics in the Heimatstil (a Swiss historicist style) to meet demand, especially from American clients.
Figurative pieces: The workshop produced a variety of objects, including figurative pieces, animal figurines, vases, and planters.
Exhibitions and recognition:
Meister's ceramics were shown at the Basel trade fair as early as 1921.
In 1927, his work was featured at the "Céramiques Suisses" exhibition in Geneva.
Meister and his wife, Gertrud, were admitted to the Swiss Werkbund in 1926.
Heinrich Meister later became president of the Swiss Association of Master Potters and was a founding member of the Swiss Ceramics Association in 1959.
Legacy: After the workshop closed in 1961, Meister continued to be recognized for his contribution to modern Swiss ceramics. Examples of Meister's ceramics are held in the collections of the Swiss National Museum and the Museum of Design in Zurich.
